The gays want to get married. And it’s making Christians crazy. This is making me crazy. Let me say before we go any further...I’m a practicing Christian. I believe the Bible is the word of God. I believe Jesus died on the cross for my sins and rose again on the third day ushering in a new hope for humanity. I’m not sure what the Bible says about homosexuality. I think it is unclear and does not allow us to be dogmatic on the topic. But, this post is not about deciding if homosexuality is a sin or not, because my point is that it doesn’t matter.
I’m going to make a bold statement here, so get ready for it. America is not a Christian nation. We are not a theocracy. Thank God. We were given the glorious gift of freedom when the founding fathers separated the church and the state. My problem is that the only arguments I seem to hear from Christians who oppose same sex marriage are purely Biblical. I think we set a dangerous precedent when we influence policy with our theology. Christians, what happens when Christianity is no longer the majority religion in America? What happens when another religious group gains traction and influences policy based on their theology? We are happy to let the church and the state dance together when the church is our own, but what happens when that church is a synagogue or a mosque? The separation of church and state is not there only to protect the state. It is also there to protect the church and her people. You are free to practice your religion and your neighbor theirs because of this separation. This is a gift from our founding fathers and a Biblical principle. God put the tree in the garden and let Adam and Eve choose. Imagine for a moment how your homosexual brothers and sisters feel in this country. Their rights are being infringed upon by the religious beliefs of people in positions of power. Does this sound familiar? Because I’m pretty sure it’s why our forefathers left England in the first place.
The Bible is not the constitution, friends. It’s the Bible. You may choose to follow it and live by it. But you cannot make others do the same. We cannot legislate our faith and we don’t need to. Christ wants people to come to Him freely, not because they are forced to by law. Have enough faith in our God to let Him do the transforming and stop asking the government to do it for Him. Christ is interested in your heart, not your morality. Jesus said a lot more about loving our neighbors and feeding the poor than He did about homosexuality. Forcing the most powerful religion in the country on the disenfranchised is unAmerican. Two women getting married is not.
P.S. I have to ask you all not to make offensive or inflammatory comments (not that any of you would, of course). If you have something to say I’m more than happy to talk about it. Please write me an e-mail or Facebook message, or give me a call. Any inappropriate or rude comments will be deleted.
P.P.S. I know my last two posts have been quite opinionated and maybe offensive to some of you. I'll do my best to make my next post more fun, but what can I say, I'm deep.
